Welcome to the Dovecote, Hexham
We have a range of accommodation for guests at our rural Northumberland home. Our Grade II listed, 18th century dovecote provides unique self-contained accommodation. It can be booked on a B&B or self catering basis. We also have 3 very comfortable B&B rooms available in the main Georgian house.
It is the ideal place for a romantic break or a rural retreat and is the perfect place for walkers. The only noise likely to disturb you is the birds!
Our house, built in 1799, was originally part of the Chesters Estate Manager’s House, owned by John Clayton, who dedicated his life to preserving Hadrian’s Wall. Our garden was its kitchen garden and orchard, with The Dovecote built in it.
The stone built dovecote provides luxury accommodation over 2 floors and it is now a beautiful bedroom for 2 people with lovely views over the garden and the open countryside.
There is a double shower room and living area downstairs, with a fridge and tea and coffee making facilities.

All 3 en-suites have been recently upgraded. All rooms have tea and coffee making facilities and remote controlled colour TV with DVD.
Free use of Wi-Fi for ALL guests

In the morning breakfast is served in the dining room.
You can help yourself to a selection of cereals, yogurts, fresh fruit, toast and jam and/or have a hearty, full English breakfast or croissants.
Our meat comes from a local butcher, using local farmers’ outdoor reared pork.
We make our own jam with fruit from our garden – strawberry, raspberry and blackcurrant.
Some of the fresh fruit also comes from our garden when available - raspberries, strawberries, grapes, apples and occasionally figs – depending on the season.
As well as breakfast tea we also have Earl Grey and a selection of fruit teas and decaffeinated tea. We have freshly ground coffee and decaffeinated ground coffee.
We are less than half a mile from Hadrian's Wall and Chesters Roman Fort, on the edge of the Northumberland National Park.
The location is perfect for visiting Hadrian's Wall and the historic town of Hexham.
We are 10 minutes from the beautiful golf courses at Hexham and Matfen Hall
We are ideally placed for fishermen. We are conveniently placed for both the North and South Tyne with the Chesters Beat being less than half a mile away.
Newcastle is only half an hour away by car and we are less than an hour from the stunning Northumberland coast.
All major facilities can be found in Hexham 6 miles away.
There are several local pubs nearby serving home-cooked meals and a Leisure Club (open to the public) with gym, sauna and swimming pool only 1 mile away.
Walkers, cyclists and fishermen
Many of our guests are walking the Hadrian’s Wall Trail. If you stay with us you don't have to walk any extra distance! Our lane runs from the Trail by Chesters Fort and meets it again at Walwick. In fact it’s much nicer using our lane than walking along the main road.
We can dry wet boots or clothing for you.
We also have a lockable shed for bikes and fishing gear. You can also use our freezer for any fish caught.
We can also provide home-cooked evening meals on request and packed lunches.
Check in and Check out
Rooms are available from 4pm on the day of arrival.
Check out is by 10am on the day of departure.
There will definitely be someone here from 4pm and usually a lot earlier (if there is no answer at the house please try in the garden across the road).
If you do arrive early and we aren't in then you are welcome to go in the garden and sit in the greenhouse or outside, depending on the weather.
